CATHOLIC DIOCESAN DIRECTORY www.upcatholic.org PLEASE SHOP AND DONATE WITH US! 800-430-2311 svdp@svdpup.org Safe environment training, background check reminders The Diocese of Marquette requires all employees and volunteers of parishes and schools to complete a background check and safe environment training prior to the start of employment or volunteering. Below are a few remind- ers of the process. Who needs to be trained and background checked? All employ- ees and volunteers in the Diocese of Marquette, over the age of 18, must have a current criminal background check on file with the diocese. A safe environment training account at www.virtus.org is necessary so the required safe environment training can be assigned and documented. How does a person obtain a background check? Background check applications can be accessed on the Diocese of Marquette website under the Protecting Children tab. See your parish or school safe environment coordinator or, call the diocesan safe environment coordinator for the nec- essary access code. How does someone sign-up for save environment training? The applicant is required to setup an ac- count at www.virtus.org. The account is reviewed, activated and, unless the applicant has reg- istered for a classroom session that occurs prior to the date they plan to be active, appropriate safe environment training is assigned by the diocesan coordinator and communicated via e-mail to the applicant. What are the options for safe environment training? There are two options, online session or live in classroom training (see below for schedule). How far in advance should the necessary training be completed? Employees and volunteers are re- quired to have a clear background check and completed the safe environ- ment training prior to being active in a parish or school. Employees are to complete the entire process prior to their first day of em- ployment. Volunteers should begin the process no later than two weeks ahead of the event for which you will be volunteer- ing. For further information, who can be contacted?
