CATHOLIC At first, this willingness to dedicate my life to Him remained hidden in my heart, but over the past five years God has used people, retreats, and His voice in prayer to encourage me to take active steps in realizing this desire, said Elizabeth Nelson, 22, a native of Glad- stone, as she explained her calling to a voca- tion to the religious life. Although I saw many attractive things in both married and conse- crated life, I noticed throughout my teenage years that whenever my prayer life was stron- gest and my relationship with the Lord was closest, my deepest desire was to give myself totally to Him as His spouse. Nelson, who grew up attending St. Joseph and St. Patrick Parish in Escanaba, recently began her formation as a woman religious. SEE NELSON, PAGE 12 Diocese welcomes three new seminarians BY JAMIE CARTER THE U.P. CATHOLIC God really used the people around me to hear his calling. I had people that would tell me they were praying for me. Or, ask me if I had ever thought about the priesthood and encouraged me to keep discerning, said Christian Flagstadt. I knew God was trying to get my attention through the people he sent into my life. Flagstadt is among the three men who began priest- hood formation for the Diocese of Marquette in the fall. For each of them, it was the people God placed before them and youth group events that helped immensely in making God's call known. Flagstadt, a member of Holy Family Parish in Glad- stone, remembers feeling a connection to the priest- hood since a young age. However, it became the stron- gest as he was finishing his associate degree just over two years ago. It was around this time that it started to come up in my personal prayer life.
