Father Hasenberg was born July 20, 1922 in Ewen, Mich., the son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Bouvier) Hasenberg. He was edu- cated in the Ewen public schools and studied the priesthood at St. Lawrence Seminary, Mt. Calvary, Wis. from 1941 to 1944. He was ordained a priest on June 4, 1949 in St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette by Bishop Thomas L. Noa. Following his ordination, Father Hasenberg served as assistant pastor of St. Ann Parish in Menominee (1949), St. Mary and St. Joseph Parish in Iron Mountain (1952), temporary administrator of Precious Blood Parish in Stephenson (1952) and tem- porary summer assistant at St. Paul Parish in Negaunee (1953). He studied at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. (1953) where he earned a masters degree in education. He served as chaplain of St. Francis Hospi- tal in Escanaba (1955), executive administra- tor of Holy Name High School in Escanaba (1957), temporary administrator of St. John Parish in Menominee (1957) and adminis- trator of St. Rita Parish n Trenary (1958). He was pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Par- ish in Calumet amalgamating four parishes (1966) and St. Agnes Parish in Iron River (1968). Father Hasenberg was administrator of Assumption Parish in Iron River (1978) and Blessed Sacrament Parish in Stambaugh (1983). In 1997 he took on senior priest status (retirement) and was in res- idence at Immaculate Conception Parish in Watersmeet until 2008. He was later removed from active ministry according to the norms of the Char- ter for the Protection of Children and Young People. Father Hasenberg joined the National Guard in 1952 and remained as chaplain in the Guard for 23 years. He went to camp in the summers, both at Camp Grayling and Camp Haven, an experience he very much enjoyed. He retired from the National Guard with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was preceded in death by his broth- er, William Hasenberg, and sisters, Mary Lonthowski and Louise Daigneault. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Jan. 27, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ewen. Interment will be in Ewen Cemetery in the spring. Hasenberg Edgar L. Garland, 92, brother of Bishop Emeritus James Garland, died Jan. 20, 2016 at his home in Valdosta, Ga. He was a World War II, Korean and Viet Nam (two tours of duty) war veteran pilot and retired from the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel. He flew the P-51 Mustang in WWII and was part of the last raid over Germany. He attended St. John the Evangelist Parish in Valdosta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances (Howell) Garland. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Courtney and Larry Mealor, Lynn and Har- vey Burch, three sons and two daughters in law, Frank and Chris Garland, Robbie and Noreen Garland and Tim Garland, grand- children and great grandchildren.
