as a high school sophomore in 2011. Growing up Catholic, Diercks stated that the weekend helped her to learn more about her faith, I really did not have or care for my faith that much until I made my Youth Encounter. During the weekend I really accepted Jesus as my savior and started having a real relationship with him, she said. My relation- ship with God started there had has grown since through Youth Encounter follow-ups and other retreats. According to Diercks, the friendships she has made along the way have influenced her. Youth Encounter helped me build a lot of great life-long friends that are Christ-cen- tered. I feel if I didnt go to Youth Encounter, then I dont think I would have the great friendships like I do today. Diercks is able to stay con- nected with the friends she has made by attending the follow-up weekends. As a part of the YEC movement, once an individual has made their retreat weekend theyre invit- ed to attend follow-up week- ends, which are generally held once a month. Current- ly, follow-up weekends take place in the Gladstone and Iron Mountain areas attract- ing YEC participants from all over the Upper Peninsula. It allows the youth to stay connected and have a support system of their faith. When we get together, we talk about the faith. Its num- ber one in our conversation, not quite like the conversa- tions you have with people at school, said Allen. We ask about how each others fourth day is. Thats every day after Youth Encounter. There are currently two YEC retreat weekends held each year at Marygrove Retreat Center in Garden. The next weekend is scheduled for March 18- 20. Registration is currently available by contacting Yvonne or Barry Voss at (906) 563-5187. Space is limited, registrations are accepted on a first come, first serve basis.
