Pastoral leadership is an essential part of the Church's mission, and Bishop John Doerfler depends great- ly on priest leadership to conduct the annual Upper Peninsula Catholic Services Appeal (UPCSA) at the par- ish level and advance the vitality of the diocesan Church. Six weeks into the appeal Bishop Doerfler sent a let- ter to all priests and pastoral coor- dinators to express his gratitude for their efforts to conduct the appeal, and he offered assistance to priests to finish up their parish appeal. Father Ben Paris of St. Francis de Sales Parish in Manistique was one priest who took the bishop up on his offer of assistance. The parish was close to meeting its UPCSA goal, but gifts had stopped coming in. Fa- ther Paris was concerned about the impact that the 2015 closure of the Manistique Paper Mill was having on the people of the parish, many who had been employed at the mill. After receiving counsel from the diocesan development office, Father Paris made an enthusiastic appeal from the pulpit one weekend - a pep talk of sorts to encourage the people to rally and meet the goal. Within a week the parish had surpassed its goal. "I talked about the importance of diocesan services and ministries. I talked about the tribunal because that's something I know a lot about, and how the annulment process is free to people now," he said. Be- fore being assigned to St. Francis de Sales, Father Paris served as the director of the diocesan marriage tri- bunal. "I wanted people who hadn't yet donated to consider doing so, but some people who had already given, gave again, even a small amount, because they really wanted to see the parish meet its goal. There's a lot of pride in the area," he said. Even though pastors across the diocese use a variety of methods to seek pledges and gifts to the appeal from their parishioners, they have one thing in common: they all want the campaign, which funds dioce- san services and ministries, to be a success. This year 45 parishes met or exceeded their UPCSA goal by Jan. 15 (see chart on page 7), compared to 35 last year. The diocese returns the money collected over and above a parish's goal to that faith com- munity for use as it sees fit. This coming year, those UPCSA refunds to parishes should total more than $130,000, which is also up from last year's $117,000. The average donor this year gave or pledged $202.76, which is up more than $4 from the previous year. The diocesan development office is available to help parishes and pas- tors achieve and exceed their UPC- SA goals. Anyone interested should contact development director Terri Gadzinski at (800) 562-9745 ext. #108 or tgadzinski@dioceseofmar- quette.org.
