8 February 10, 2017 THE U.P. CATHOLIC SENIOR TRAVEL www.upcatholic.org BY JAMIE GUALDONI THE U.P. CATHOLIC Traveling is something Sheila Heikkinen of LAnse has always had a passion for. Over the last ive years, she has been able to take this enjoy- ment and lead others on bus tours throughout the United States and Cana- da. Heikkinen had lost her job due to downsizing and cutbacks with her company. But, she was able to take the negative of the loss and turn it into something positive. I have certainly been blessed by all of this, and I know it! She was sparked by the idea of leading bus tours during a conversation with her sister-in-law. She asked me the key question, 'What do you want to do?' The only answer I had for her was I like to cook and I like to travel, explained Heikkinen. I knew at this stage of my life I wasnt going to cook for a living. But, it was enough to put the thought of traveling in the back of my mind. It was soon after that Upper Peninsula Trav- elers (UPT) was born in 2012. Several years back, Heikkinen had traveled with Debbie Tours Travel Company, owned by Lane Larson. He and his assistant had forever left an impression on Heikkinen. I remember telling them, 'I want to do what you do.' But, never in a million years did I think I would. UPT is especially designed with the senior traveler in mind. However, you don't have to be a senior. Heikkinen has had teenagers and younger travel with her. There are generally an equal number of couples, friends and single people that make the trips. I am very fortunate to say many of my trav- elers have traveled with me many times. I even have a few that have been on almost every trip. These trips have also given her and her husband Bob an opportunity to meet people and develop friendships.
