8 February 24, 2017 THE U.P. CATHOLIC CATHOLIC SCHOOLS www.upcatholic.org BY VICTORIA LAFAVE HOLY NAME CATHOLIC SCHOOL Walking by the music room at Holy Name Catholic School might sound a bit like being on the Hawaiian Islands. That's because stu- dents at HNCS are enjoying learning to play the ukulele, a traditional Hawaiian stringed instrument. The new ukuleles were donated to HNCS by Kala Brand Music Company. Joe Harmsen, HNCS vocal music instruc- tor, spearheaded the project this past De- cember by encouraging HNCS to take part in Kala Brand Music's Waterman Ukulele School Facebook Giveaway. Friends and fam- ilies of HNCS were encouraged to "like" Kala Brand Music's Facebook page. After hun- dreds of people visited, "liked" and shared Kala Brand Music's Facebook post, HNCS was chosen as one of 125 schools across the country to receive the 40 new Waterman ukuleles. After students returned from Christmas break, they were welcomed back to school with new ukuleles. In January, Harmsen started teaching HNCS first through fifth graders to play their new ukuleles in music class. Harmsen says he is enjoying seeing the students' excitement in learning to play the ukulele. "It is so great to be able to teach the students such an accessible and fun instru- ment! The ukulele is a perfect instrument for introducing kids to all kinds of musical concepts and skills. I can't wait to take the students' singing abilities we have been de- veloping and start strumming ukuleles along with them. Thank you to Kala Brand Music for making this possible for me and my stu- dents!" Principal Joseph Carlson says he is thank- ful to Kala Brand Music for donating the ukuleles and to Harmsen for teaching the students. "We are grateful to Kala Brand Mu- sic for donating 40 new Kala ukuleles to our school, and also for Joe Harmsen for his time and talents in teaching the students to play them," he said. "This is a very unique experi- ence for our students at Holy Name." For more information on Kala ukuleles, visit www.kalabrand.com or search Kala Brand Music on Facebook.
