www.upcatholic.org THE U.P. CATHOLIC ALTARED March 31, 2017 13 I wouldnt do that. I would want the Earth to swallow me up at that moment. According to Fradd, its because we know that theres nothing mas- culine about going to a strip club. Theres nothing to respect in a man who goes to strip clubs. BEING AGAINST PORN IS JUST A RELIGIOUS THING I have multiple friends who are atheist, agnostics, or just different religions, who are against pornogra- phy. It has nothing to do with reli- gion. This isnt a religion thing, it is a human rights thing. Fradd cited that over the last four decades, there has been research from academia that has strongly stated that pornography is not good for us, neurologically, emo- tionally, for our relationships. The bottom line is anyone who is mildly open to scientific evidence should seriously be open to the pos- sibility that porn is not worth your time. THOSE IN THE INDUSTRY FIND IT LIBERATING According to Fradd, this is a conve- nient myth to believe. Because that way were like, not only am I gentle- man, Im contributing to the libera- tion of women all over the world. Fradd has worked with several women who once worked in the porn industry. The stories that they tell me are drearily predictable. In many of those instances, Fradd has seen that it involves a serious form of abuse or neglect when the girl was younger. When trying to un- successfully process that abuse/neglect, one of two things happen, either shes preyed on directly by the sex industry, or she feels like she has no other choice. PORN IS ONLY FANTASY Many think that looking at porn doesn't affect their lives. Looking at por- nography affects the way our brain thinks. Fradd explained that when someone looks at pornography, the brain does not, in fact, distinguish between fantasy and reality. The brain thinks its participating in what its seeing. And because of this, its affecting us. PORNOGRAPHY ISN'T ADDICTIVE Someone might say porn isnt addictive because you dont inject porn. Porn isnt a drug. So, its not addictive, only drugs are addictive. Looking at science and the effects on the brain, Fradd expressed that pornography elicits powerful brain drugs, known as neurotransmitters in the brain, in which the brain can become addicted. One of those neurotransmitters is dopamine. Its what makes us do things that are conducive to our sur- vival. Its why you want to exercise. Dopamine is good thing. But, when pornography is used compulsively, the dopamine begins to shrink and directly effects our brain. I CAN NEVER BE FREE OF PORN Fradd shared that when he was a teenager he looked at pornography often, but it was a conversion to Christ that make him realize what it was doing to him and others When I was a teenager if you would have said to me, Do you believe in God? I would have said, Probably not. I think God is what people invent so they are more com- fortable with death. When he was 17 years old, he had an encounter with Jesus Christ on a retreat. I had come home and knew that I had to change my life, and I needed to stop looking at porn. I realized that these are people that Jesus also died for, and its not cool that I treat them like this. So, I began going to confession. If you're stuck in this stuff, you're not bad. Youre a good person. You are loved by God and your life doesnt have to be this way. You can live a much more interesting life than this. To view resources for overcoming pornography temptation, see below. MattFradd speaks with high school students following his talk in Escanaba. FROM PAGE 12 During his talk with high school students, Matt Fradd offered advice and resources to assist in standing against the temptations of pornography. Tell a trusted adult. If youre addict- ed to porn and want to stop, tell your parents. They love you and they want to help you. Somethings can only be healed by telling the truth. You need to bring someone else into this. If youre not ready to tell your parents, tell a youth minister, tell a trusted adult. Download the phone app, Victory. Morning, noon and night the app checks in with you, says, How are you doing? You can say, good, okay, or bad. If you had a set back, you press that button. It then takes you to a new screen to assess your set back, asking you what the trigger was. Theres also a button that you can press that if you feel tempted and within seconds there will be three accountability part- ners praying for you. Its completely confidential and private. Visit www.fightthenewdrug.org. Visit the website and follow on social media. Fight the new drug has an online recovery program. There are a series of short videos that help you to understand what youre going through, and encourag- es you in this battle. Resources to stand against temptation Prayer for God's mercy and overcoming sin I glorify You in making known how good You are towards sinners, and that Your mercy prevails over all malice, that nothing can destroy it, that no matter how many times or how shamefully we fall, or how criminally, a sinner need not be driven to despair of Your pardonIt is in vain that Your enemy and mine sets new traps for me every day. He will make me lose everything else before the hope that I have in Your mercy." - St. Claude de la Colombiere
