Washington Marquette (Located across from the Ramada Inn) One woman's journey of faith connected to former diocesan bishop BY ANGELA JOHNSON A SPECIAL TO THE U.P. CATHOLIC When Becky Cairati's boyfriend and confir- mation sponsor gave her a surprise trip to visit her sister, neither realized the 1,990-mile trek to Portland, Ore. would bring her back to the beginning of her faith journey. Cairati, 26, was baptized Catholic as an infant, but not raised in the Church. Now she is seek- ing Eucharist and Confirmation at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Ishpeming this Easter. But her boyfriend, Anthony Bertucci, said he was taken aback when he realized the trip hed planned as a Christmas gift months before would have them out of town for the March 5 Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Con- version in Marquette. The ceremony typically takes place on the first Sunday of Lent and is the inal step in the preparation for catechumens and candidates before being welcomed into the Church at the Easter Vigil. As soon as he realized the oversight, Bertucci said he contacted Father Larry Van Damme pastor of St. John Parish to see if anything could be done. Father Van Damme quickly connected the dots. When they explained that they were going to ly into Portland, I remembered from Becky's baptismal certif- icate that it was then-Father Alexander Sample who baptized her at St. Peter Cathedral (in 1992). Father Van Damme received permission from Bishop John Doerfler in Marquette to make the arrangements for Cairati to participate in the Rite of Election in Portland. Now-Archbishop Sample responded with a very enthusiastic yes, Father Van Damme said. A few email exchanges and everything went off without a glitch, he said. Cairati and Bertucci were included in the liturgy celebrated by Archbishop Sample at St. Mary Cathedral of the Immacu- late Conception, the mother church of the archdiocese. At the conclusion of the ceremony, Archbishop Sample addressed the large congregation that had been surprised upon hearing Caira- tis hometown was clear across the country. It really touches my heart' to have her here, Archbishop Sample told the congregation, according to the March 14, Catholic Sentinal, which also featured Cairati's story. Afterward Cairati and Bertucci said they were happy to have spent some time chatting with Archbishop Sample who sought them out in the crowd. You can tell he feels a strong connection to the UP, Cairati said. He was thrilled he could make it full circle (in Becky's jour- ney), Bertucci added. offer a refreshing and hopeful example of a couple prayerfully supporting one another as they strive to make Godly choices in their relationship, he said. For me, going through this process with Becky has really spurred me to take the time to try something new. Ive found there is a lot more to discover, Bertucci said. He en- couraged others: Take that little leap of faith and pick up that book your pastor has put out. Try that Bible study. God has clearly been paving the way for me, Cairati said reflecting on her journey back to the faith. My life has been changing in ways that I never thought possi- ble, she said. It has been amazing to watch how God has worked in my life. He has so much more in store for us than we can ever imagine. You just have to say yes to him and be open to being molded by him. Cairati was baptized at St. Peter Cathedral as an infant by then Fa- ther Alexander Sample.
