Dundon, SJ, 83, died on March 9, 2016, at St. Camillus Jesuit Communi- ty in Wauwatosa, Wis. He was a Jesuit for 63 years, and a priest for 46 years. Father Dundon was born in Iron Mountain in 1932, and was raised attending St. Mary and St. Joseph Parish. He entered the Society of Jesus at St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant, Mo., in 1952. After pronouncing first vows, he spent a year teaching at Red Cloud Indian School, before following the usual course of studies at St. Stanislaus Seminary and Saint Louis University. Father Dundon earned a PhD in chem- istry from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore during his regency. He stud- ied theology at Woodstock College in Maryland and was ordained a priest on June 4, 1969. He did his tertianship in St. Paul, Minn., from 1972 to 1973. He received his final vows of the Society of Jesus on May 3, 1977 in Lagos, Nigeria. He spent much of his time minister- ing in Africa. He taught chemistry and served as a chaplain at the University of Benin in Benin City, Nigeria for 16 years. He also taught at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda and Arrupe College in Harare, Zimbabwe. After three years as pastor of St. Benedict the Moor Parish in Omaha, Neb., Father Dundon returned to Nigeria, where he served as a pastor in several Jesuit parishes from 2006 to 2014. In 2009, he was officially tran- scribed to the North-West Africa Prov- ince. Declining health led him to return to the Wisconsin Province in 2014, and he became an active member of the St. Camillus Jesuit Community until his death. A funeral was held at St. Camillus Chapel and burial was at Calvary Ceme- tery in Milwaukee. Father Robert W. Dundon, SJ Father Robert W. Dundon, SJ The Catechism of the Catholic Church states the following in regards to praying for the dead: 1032: This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin. From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.610 The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead. To view more on what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says about praying for the dead, see numbers 1371 and 1689.
