Carmel will be held each night at 7 p.m. at the Carmelite Mon- astery in Iron Mountain. CATHOLIC CALENDAR The Year of Mercy through the Sacred Heart The First Friday Club series at St. Michael Parish in Mar- quette will be held on June 3 from 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. ET in the Zyrd Parish Center. Deacon Steve and Jackie Gretzinger of Menominee will present, Living the Year of Mercy through the Sacred Heart of Jesus. They will help par- ticipants to identify those people, times and events in our lives that need healing, forgiveness and mercy. In addition, they will share how Jesus, through his Most Sacred Heart, can work miracles on June 3, which is The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The cost is $10 at the door, which also in- cludes a buffet lunch. Volleyball tournament to benefit Norway School The James Harvey Moore Memorial volleyball tournament, benefiting Holy Spirit Catholic School in Norway will be held on June 5 at the Thirsty Whale in Norway. The community is invited to form coed teams containing six members per team. Registration is a minimum $75 per team, but participants are encouraged to secure additional sponsors in $75 increments. The team with the most sponsors will win a free meal at The Thirsty Whale. It is recommended to register for the event by June 3. Teams can register by calling Paula at (906) 563-5466. Joseph Zryd, the first pastor of St. Michael parish in Mar- quette, flew from Rome for the parish's 25th anniversary. Among Bishop Thomas Noa's 430 nominees for the new dioce- san synod were 240 lay people. Construction began on the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres novi- tiate and motherhouse in Marquette Township. FROM THE U.P. CATHOLIC MAY 16-31, 1991 Newly ordained were Fathers Greg Heikkila of Marquette and Jamie Ziminski of Menominee. Bishop Mark Schmitt called for a task force to develop guidelines for paying church employees. With 8,248 filled gravesites and running out of room, Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette cleared four more acres for future buri- als. Public holy hours at Monastery A Holy Hour in honor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel will be held July 14-16 at the Car- melite Monastery, Iron Mountain (corner of M-95 and US2). All are invited to join the Carmelite Nuns at the 7 p.m. Holy Hour each evening consisting of Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, reflections on Our Blessed Mother, rosary, Litany of Our Lady and Hymns. Father Jacinto Mary Chapin, F.I., a mem- ber of the Franciscans of the Immaculate who is from the Shrine of Our Lady of Gua- dalupe in LaCrosse, Wis, will conduct the Holy Hour. His talks will include the theme of Mother of Mercy during this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Prayer leaflets, rosaries and holy cards will be available for the taking. Enrollment in the Brown Scapular will be offered on the evening of July 16 for anyone who wishes to be enrolled - which means acceptance of Mary as Mother and faithful guide through the trials and trib- ulations of life.
