BY JAMIE GUALDONI THE U.P. CATHOLIC When we evangelize, God shows up. He wants to be there, He wants to be in that moment, stated Denise Bossert. If you want to sense the power of the Holy Spirit start shar- ing Christ. Start sharing his Church because God will show up. Bossert presented at the annual Hospitality Lecture in Marquette on May 30. She spoke to participants about how the Visitation of Mary and Elizabeth is a blueprint for evange- lization. As a part of her presenta- tion, Bossert outlined the gifts of the visitation that are essential to evan- gelization. SPONTANEITY According to Bossert, the first gift in evangelization is spontaneity, which comes out of openness, and being ready to say yes quickly. Bossert explained that Mary is an example of this openness at the an- nunciation when she gave her yes. Did she worry about the ramifica- tions? Did she ask for a little time to consider this before the fallout of what would happen? Like, getting stoned to death. Would she mention Joseph to the archangel Gabriel, could you maybe visit him? What about my parents? She voiced none of these fears. Although, she had to have had fear, said Bossert. She didnt live with her head in the sand. She knew her culture. But, her desire to follow the Lords will surpassed everything. Bossert posed the question to participants, What about us? Were resistant to change, we cling to our ideas stubbornly. She added, God is asking you to share Jesus Christ with someone, its not a question. If youre ready to follow Mary, give God your fiat, Your may it be done to me according to your word. COURAGE You may say, Im not a coura- geous person. But, no, you are, or you should be, said Bossert. She explained that the gift of cour- age doesnt come by DNA, its given to everyone at confirmation. Bossert stated that at confirmation each of us are called to get out there and go. That is, to get out there and share the good news of the Gospel. We are afraid, and there are things were being called to that are outside of our comfort zone, and evangeliza- tion is one of those. Its going to take some courage. JOY If you have not felt the urgency to evangelize, maybe you have not be- come a vessel of joy. Bossert encouraged participants to open their ears in the Easter Season to the line in the Mass, paschal joy. Thats the key to evangelization. You have to have some paschal joy or you cant evangelize. But, she warned that jealousy may get in the way of joy. Dont become jealous of somebody else. Dont become jealous of some- body elses gifts. You have been given gifts unique to you and your calling. Be illed with joy. Bossert looked at Mary and Eliz- abeth in the light of jealousy. She explained Elizabeth is married and her husband is on a team with her. Ini- tially Mary was alone, and she could have been very jealous of the intimacy that Elizabeth enjoyed with Zachariah. But, she was filled with joy. READINESS God leads a little. Then he leads a little more, and then a little more, said Bossert. You just keep saying, Okay. Are you ready? According to Bossert, sometimes the leading will be fun and sometimes it will be exciting, but other times it will be the sorrowful mysteries. Grace is enough for each step, but it is not enough when you pile on your thoughts, your anxieties, your worries, your planning, your critiquing. Youve just got to be willing to say okay. HUMILITY Bossert explained how Mary and Elizabeth are a strong example of hu- mility because they didnt hold to their own plans. Mary emptied herself. I think thats the best definition for humility - get over yourself, said Bossert. Elizabeth too displays humility. In Luke were told that shes a righteous woman, having observed all the command- ments of the Lord. Now, shes at the highest level as a woman whos older and pregnant in a miraculous way. But, when Mary arrives she remains humble. She did not know Mary was going to visit, nor did she have a warn- ing she was carrying the Son of God. Grace showed up when she eclipsed herself and all of these things and her own status and her own image in the society. She knew. She knew who Mary was carrying inside of her. Bossert added, Whether you are young like Mary - or whether you are 8 July 14, 2017 THE U.P.
