BY JAMIE CARTER THE U.P. CATHOLIC There always seems to be something new, something different. Theres just a real- ly good energy about all the retreats that come through here, said Father Timothy Ferguson, rector of Marygrove Retreat Center, nestled in the Garden Peninsula of the Up- per Peninsula. The retreat center is owned and operated by the Diocese of Marquette and offers some- thing for everyone regardless of interest and age. Father Ferguson has served as the rector there for just under a year and has been inspired by each of the retreats he has seen in action. The thing that has struck me the most in being here is the variety of retreats that come through. The silent re- treats, the youth retreats, the Cursillo retreats, the marriage retreats, the Knights of Co- lumbus, the priests, and the different groups that come through. Each of them have a different, positive flavor to it. Marygrove sits on 40 acres of wooded land which offers a quiet and peaceful place to retreat to, both inside and out. Outdoors, retreat participants can find the Stations of the Cross and the grotto of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The grotto sits among the pine and cedar trees, or Marys grove, which inspires the name of the center. Within the walls of Marygrove includes a chapel and adoration chapel, a lounge to meet, read and reflect, a conference room and a dining area. In addition, there are 36 single and double furnished rooms, which all create an environment of a second home. People really feel in ownership to Marygrove. This is our diocesan retreat cen- ter, so my hope is that everyone in the dio- cese feels welcomed and at home here, said Father Ferguson. The environment we try to create is a second home. We want people to feel like theyre not going to a hotel, but theyre coming to a second home. Aside from being a second home, Father Ferguson expressed that participants can ex- pect some quiet and alone time with the Lord during a retreat, especially with cell phone reception at a minimum. Generally speaking, we dont have really good cell phone recep- tion, which is more of a feature than a bug. It really allows you to disconnect. 18 July 15, 2016 THE U.P.
