www.upcatholic.org THE U.P. CATHOLIC RETREATS & SPIRITUAL JOURNEYS July 15, 2016 21 Companions of Christ the Lamb: From a vision to reality BY CAROL HOLLENBECK THE U.P. CATHOLIC The story of the Companions of Christ the Lamb (CCL) in Paradise, Mich., begins with a vision. While founder Father Jack Fabian was pastor at St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Newport, Mich., he was approached by a woman who said she had received a vision from God that showed Father Jack undertaking a special work establish- ing a religious order. That was May of 1989. As a parish priest, Father Jack (as he is called) had no idea how to begin a new faith community. He immediately sought advice, and received support from his bishop, the archbishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit. From 1989-91, Father Jack met with canon lawyers and theologians for help in writing statutes for CCL. In the fall of 1994, CCL members are led to 960 acres for sale north of Paradise. It is bought, and becomes the retreat center. From spring of 1995 and over the next several years, CCL members build a chapel, kitchen, trails, retreat sites, hermit- ages, secluded cabins, outbuildings, as well as erecting Sta- tions of the Cross and other statues. In August of 1997, Bishop James Garland, Diocese of Mar- quette, blesses the chapel. On Sept. 14, 2005, Bishop Garland establishes CCL as a Public Association of the Christian Faithful. That same month, he affirms that CCL is subject to the Diocese of Marquette and Father Jack remains a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Formation center construction, on separate property from the retreat center, begins in spring of 2007. In November of 2008, then Bishop Alexander Sample bless- es the new cemetery and formation center. In December, CCL religious move into the new formation center. It is completed in December 2009. On May 30, 2011, CCL is established as a Public Clerical As- sociation of the Christian Faithful. On June 3, 2016, Father Jernej `uatar is ordained to the priesthood and released to the ministry of CCL. 59TH ANNUAL ST. JOSEPH PARISH PICNIC PERKINS Sunday July 17th Join us for Mass at 11:00 A.M.
