BY JAMIE GUALDONI THE U.P. CATHOLIC The community of K.I. Sawyer has a fresh clean look thanks to a group of local vol- unteers. Earlier this summer, more than 75 people from K.I. Sawyer and the surrounding area joined forces to help clean up trash in several neighborhoods. God has given us the gift of the Earth, and we believe it's our job to keep God's gift clean," said Father Allen Mott, pastor of St. Antho- ny Parish in Gwinn and St. Joseph Mission in Northland. The whole community has helped in this little part of God's Earth." This is the second year vol- unteers have come together to make this event possible. In 2016, the crews collected 15,000 pounds of garbage. This year, that number was more than tripled with collect- ing 46,000 pounds of trash, along with more than 200 tires. According to Father Mott, a handful of volunteers from the St. Francis Connec- tion Center at K.I. Sawyer showed interest in starting up the project once again this year. "It's really a grass roots effort that has brought us all together," said Father Mott. When Father Mott learned of the interest, the process of writing a grant began. The Community Foundation of Marquette Coun- ty donated a grant for the cleanup last year, making Father Mott hopeful the foundation would contribute again. The foundation awarded the clean up a $2,500 grant, which got the ball rolling for other contributors to join forces. We received the grant, and others said they wanted to be a part of it," said Father Mott. "It has been an opportunity to build good, strong relationships." Other sponsors included Forsyth Town- ship, Macasu Inc., St. Francis Connection Center and St. Anthony Parish. Father Mott added, "It was great to see not only the community involvement, but also the buy-in by various sponsors, and the vast number of people that helped the day of the clean-up."
