Sister Irene Howell, IBVM is celebrating her 75th jubilee this year. She was born on Sugar Island to Charles and Ellen Howell - the first born of seven children. Sister Irene graduated from Loretto Academy in Sault Ste. Marie prior to entering the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Woodlawn in Chicago. Since entering the community in 1942, she has ministered in Phoenix and Detroit. She also served in the Diocese of Mar- quette at Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Assinins. relationship with the Bless- ed Mother, with being able to bear children, said Au- dra. I had always wanted a large family, and it was hard for me to accept that loss. Even though she struggled with it, Audra knew that Gods plan was bigger than her own. I truly believe that God gives us the desires of our heart, and thankfully not always in the ways we want. The way he has given myself and Matt the desires of our heart to grow our family, through foster care and adoption, is perfect. According to Matt, since he was younger, he had a nudging from God saying, be prepared, you wont have birth children. An idea that he had always accepted. God put it on my heart for so long, that my calling wasn't to have my own chil- dren, but to love children that were born to other peo- ple. That really prepared me for the idea of doing foster care. Audra and Matt both agree that foster care, even through its challenges, has strengthened their marriage, family and ultimately their faith. Before we got our girls, I don't think in my whole life I ever had to abandon myself to God, and throw my arms open and say, 'do what you will,' explained Matt. In foster care, there were so many things we couldn't control. But, we had to look at each other and say, 'we don't know what's going to happen, but it will be okay. This is bigger than us.' What advice does the couple have for those discerning foster care or adoption? I ask anybody out there that feels they have any- thing to give, as a parent, as a mentor, to just go talk about it with somebody, said Matt. We say that about all vocations, go find somebody, talk to them. It's the same with this, there is such a need. Editor's note: Audra serves as the Execu- tive Director of Pregnancy Services of Delta County, while Matt is the co-coordinator of religious education and youth ministry director at St. Anne Parish in Escanaba. The couple is open to discussing foster care and adoption with any couples that may be interested. They can be reached by email at, audrabuchmiller@gmail.com. www.upcatholic.org THE U.P.
