He was a Maryk- noll priest for 56 years. Father Brien was born on Sept. 4, 1933 in Escanaba. In 1953, he completed his studies at the Salvatorian Seminary in St. Nazianz, Wis., and pro- ceeded to enter Maryknoll. Father Brien pronounced his Perpetual Oath in 1959, and was ordained on June 11, 1960. He was then assigned to Taiwan, where he served for 33 years administering pastoral work in par- ishes. In 1982, he was appointed assistant regional superior for Maryknolls Taiwan region and then served two terms as regional superior. Father Brien returned to the United States in 1991 and worked with mission education and promotion work in Seattle, Wash. From 1993-2001 he served as the director of the Maryknoll House in Detroit. Father Brien is survived by his twin broth- er, Rev. Peter C. Brien, M.M., and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Nan Brien of Madison, Wis. Van Damme, 68, brother of Rev. Larry Van Damme, passed away on Aug. 19, 2016 at River Camp on the Van Damme Farm in Watson, Mich. Van Damme was born on Feb. 13, 1948 to Paul and Jeanette Van Damme of Escanaba. He attended Wells Township School and Marquette Senior High School before complet- ing an agricultural program at Michigan State University. On June 26, 1971, he married Linda Miles. For many years, Van Damme assisted in operating the 1,200 acre family farm, which eventually frew into a successful french fry processing company. Van Damme later began industrial work and started MJ Van Damme Trucking, Inc. He also served on the board of direc- tors for First Bank Upper Michigan, Alma College, and the Michigan Potato Growers Association. He was also the Wells Town- ship Treasurer for 33 years and a volunteer ireman for the Wells Township Fire Depart- ment. Van Damme is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda; four daughters: Michele Dem- ing (Jeffrey), Melissa Delmont (James), Mol- ly Meyers (Brett) and Melinda Dow (Joel); Nine grandchildren: Mallory, Marissa, Mi- chael, Morgan, Makayla, Marli, Miles, Max and Micah; and father, Paul Van Damme; and siblings: Kathy VanDamme (Ashley, Austin), Sharon VanDamme-Hollis (Chris, Rob), Laurie VanDamme-Govier (Steve) and Father Larry VanDamme. He was preceded in death by his mother Jeanette VanDamme, his sister Clara VanDamme, infant niece Kelsey VanDamme-Chipman and his father- in-law Jerry Miles. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Au- fust 24 at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Parish in Escanaba, Father Al Mott officiated. Burial took place in the Northland Cemetery. Michael J.
