CATHOLIC DEATHS, BAPTISMS, WEDDINGS www.upcatholic.org Gerald Vairo, 77, of Lake Linden, a former member of the Michigan Catholic Conference board of direc- tors, died Sept. 8. He was born on Aug. 2, 1940 in Lau- rium, the son of Dominic and Dorothy (Ahrbeck) Vairo. He was a 1958 grad- uate of Calumet High School. Vairo attended University of Notre Dame, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1962 and a Juris Doctorate in 1964. He married Claudette Dion on Aug. 24, 1963 at St. Joseph Parish in Lake Linden. He began his law career with Messner & Labine in Houghton. Later he became the senior member and partner of the law firm of Vai- ro, Mechlin, Tomasi, Johnson and Manchester for 50 years. Vairo was a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Michigan Council of School Attorneys, the American Bar Association, past president of the Copper Country Bar Association, and an arbitrator and member of the American Arbitration Association. He served on the board of directors and board of trustees for the Mich- igan Catholic Conference, as well as numerous other boards in the community. In addition, he was a parish- ioner of St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Calumet, where he served as a lector and committee member for the restoration of the stained glass windows. Vairo is survived by his wife Claudette, children, Julie (Mike) Milani of Hinsdale, Ill., Nicole (John) Brisson of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Gina (Patrick) Flynn of Uni- versity Heights, Ohio and Stephen (Shannon) Vairo of Houghton, Mich.; grandchildren Tim and Katie Milani, Dominic and Sophie Brisson, Thomas and John Flynn and Gerald J. Vairo; along with his sister Dr. Judith Best of Ithaca, N.Y. and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dominic and Dorothy and grandson Anthony. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Sept. 16 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Calumet. Father Abraham Mupparathara was the principal celebrant. Father Corbin Eddy concelebrated while Deacon Art Stancher assisted.
