BY JOHN FEE THE U.P. CATHOLIC While going through a closet, Lore Ann Parent discovered a family treasure that she knew others would treasure as well. She found her grandfathers Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus sword and scabbard along with ser- vice baldric (sash), ring and photos. I knew it meant so much to him and knew it would mean so much to someone else, she said of his service and the items he left behind. So she recently donated the items to the Msgr. Nolan B. McKevitt Knights of Columbus Council 689 in Marquette. His cape and chapeau had been do- nated previously. We not only appreciate the do- nation, but will give it proper respect, Grand Knight Andy Wasilewski of Council 689 said of the pictures, sword and other Fourth Degree regalia donated by Parent. Wasilewski said the sword and scabbard will be passed on to the Fourth Degree Assembly. The photos and other items will be on display in the meeting hall. Lores pride in her heritage was on display as she pointed out her grandfather and two great uncles in the photos (she donated), said Wasilewski, adding that the council is grateful for her thoughtful gift. The first Fourth Degree class of Marquette was initiated in 1927. Based on photos we were able to determine Lores grandfather became a Fourth De- free Knight (sometime) between 1927 and 1935, the year of the cathedral ire, said Wasilewski. Parent said her grandfather, Ar- thur Parent, was French Canadian and was born in the late 1890s. He and his wife, Evangeline (Durand), were faithful Catholics who lived in the Marquette area. Parent described their home as a place of hospitality where everybody was a friend. Parent remembered spending the summers with her grandparents as a child during the 1960s. When her grandfather came home in the evening, she said he didnt watch a TV program or the news. Instead, he would read a book or a Catholic magazine or pray a rosary. He was very proud to be a Knight. And it was kind of neat to see him dressed up with the sword, Parent said.
