In anticipation of the diocesan cel- ebration of the 100th anniversary of the first apparition at Fatima, a replica of the statue of Mary at Fatima will be available to visit parishes throughout the U.P. On May 13, 1917, the first of six apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three shepherd children in Portugal took place. The Blessed Virgin delivered a message of hope every month from May 13 to Oct. 13. During the final apparition, more than 70,000 witnessed the Miracle of the Sun. During this mira- cle, the sun changed colors and appeared to dance in the sky. A diocesan celebration of Fatima's centennial will be held at St. Peter Cathedral on Saturday, May 13, 2017. The celebration is in its early planning stages, but organizers want the faithful of the Diocese of Marquette to save the date and attend. Father Corey Litzner is the spiritual director for the committee planning this event. He recommends that parish- es throughout the Diocese of Marquette schedule a visit of the Diocesan Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima before the diocesan celebration. The statue is a true replica of the official pilgrim statue. It was carved from a holm oak tree, taken from the Cova Da Iria area of Fatima where the Blessed Mother appeared. The Diocesan Pilgrim Virgin Statue was blessed by the Cardinal of Lisbon, Portugal for our diocese and was de- livered in 1978. Many blessings have been attributed through the visitation of the statue in our parishes. To have the statue visit your church, get your pastor's approval. Then contact its custodians, Bill and Sharon Dani, at (906) 346-3480 to schedule its visit. www.upcatholic.org THE U.P.
