ET Celebrant: Monsignor Michael Steber ALL SOULS DAY MASS On All Souls Day, we not only remem- ber the dead, but we apply our efforts, through prayer, alms-giving, and the Mass, to their release from Purgatory. BY DEACON THOMAS FOYE THE DIOCESE OF MARQUETTE An indulgence is the par- tial or plenary (complete) remission of the temporal punishment due to sin in which the guilt has already been forgiven. Even though the guilt from a sin may be forgiven through the sacra- ment of reconciliation, in certain cases, their temporal punishment, in purgatory, is retained. This punishment is reduced or removed com- pletely by an indulgence. A partial indulgence removes some of the time while a ple- nary indulgence removes all of the accumulated time. Once gained, an indulgence can typically be applied either to one's self, to a specific deceased person or to the deceased in general. It cannot be applied to another living person. Certain indulgences such as the All Souls Day Indulgence can only be applied to the souls in purgatory. Indulgences have four requirements: 1. You must re- ceive the sacrament of reconciliation 20 days before or after a qualifying action. 2. You must receive Holy Communion 20 days before or after a qualifying action. 3. You must pray for the intentions of the pope. 4. You must take part in some qualifying event or action such as adoration, Di- vine Mercy Sunday celebra- tion, All Souls Day cemetery service or many others. In the case of All Souls Day: An indulgence, ap- plicable only to the souls in purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed. The indulgence is plenary each day from the 1st to the 8th of Novem- ber; on other days of the year it is partial. (The Enchiridion of Indul- fences, 1968) Therefore, attending the All Souls Day Mass at any cemetery, as the qualifying event, and completing the preceding three requirements will frant souls in purgatory a plenary indulgence. Editor's note: An All Souls Day Mass will take place at Holy Cross Ceme- tery in Marquette on Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m. All Souls Day indulgences 1 b y E f t a q c t f p Prayer for souls in Purgatory Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family.
