BY JAMIE GUALDONI THE U.P. CATHOLIC Its putting full trust in God, said Shirley Fitzpatrick of Sacred Heart Religious Goods in Marquette. Shirley, along with her hus- band Cliff opened the doors of a Catholic bookstore 25 years ago, their faith and trust in God has kept their business open. In the spring of 1991, Shirley had just com- pleted the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program, while Cliff had recently come back to the faith. The couple couldnt get their hands on enough about the faith to learn more, which led them to praying about opening a Catholic bookstore. We couldnt get enough of reading about the faith, but we couldn't find anything around here, explained Cliff. We would go to the one Christian bookstore in town, and they only had a handful of books on the faith. Often times we would go down to Green Bay to get books. With much prayer, along with persistence from Shirley, the couple followed Gods voice, opening Sacred Heart Religious Goods on Oct. 1, 1991. We prayed about it. Shirley kept saying maybe we should have a Catholic bookstore. So, we finally did it, Cliff said. Shirley added, I was the big instigator. We didnt know what we were doing, but it all worked out and fell into place. You know when youre doing the Lords will, and it just all falls into place. The Fitzpatricks both agreed that their store is a way to minister to others through doing Gods will. One of their largest rewards has been the many people they have met over the years. People can order things off the internet, but you dont get the personal one-on-one that people get here. Its not just the goods, theres more, said Shirley. Its sometimes just a place for people to come to and share their stories. Ill see someone come in, and theyll tell me their story, explained Cliff. If its beyond us, we try to steer people to a priest, deacon, etc. According to Cliff, hes seen the fruits of 12 November 18, 2016 THE U.P.
