CATHOLIC www.upcatholic.org Bishop Garland celebrates silver jubilee of installation as bishop Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, both days of obligation Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday this year, with Christmas Day the following Monday. Catholics are obliged to attend one of the usual Sunday Masses, as well as a Christmas Mass. Due to the number of Masses priests may have to celebrate over the two days, parishioners should check local Mass times to make sure Sunday times have not changed. The U.P. Catholic will publish a list of Christmas Mass times for the diocese in the Dec. 22, 2017 issue. It will also be online at www.dioceseofmarquette.org/ChristmasMassTimes. BY LOREENE ZENO KOSKEY THE U.P. CATHOLIC I hope you will see me as a man of prayer who attempts to be steeped in the Gospel. With those words, Bishop James H. Garland introduced himself to the over 750 people in attendance at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette on Nov. 11, 1992, the day of his installation as bishop of the Diocese of Marquette. In recalling that event twenty-five years later, Bishop-Emeritus Garland mused, The time passes quickly. Its kind of hard to believe its been that long. His appointment to Marquette came during the bishops ninth year as auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. He remembered his boss, Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk, remark- ing about the move to the Upper Peninsula diocese. Well, its bigger than Steubenville! he told Bishop Garland, in referencing the Ohio diocese that had welcomed a new bishop earlier that year. Area Catholics and community members learned of their new bishop following an Oct. 6 news conference, at which Bishop Mark Schmitt announced his retirement. The bish- op-elect participated in the news briefing by telephone. The next step was deciding on a date for the upcoming installation. Bishop Garland said, I remember Bishop Schmitt saying, We cant let it go too long. Well have winter in the U.P. Peo- ple wont be able to come. The bishops wont be able to come in.
