20 December 18, 2015 THE U.P. CATHOLIC www.upcatholic.org St. Francis Connection Center St. Francis Connection Center (SFCC) located at K.I. Sawyer has been awarded a $10,000 donation from the Catholic Extension Society. SFCC is an out reach of St. Anthony Parish in Gwinn. The pre- sentation of the check took place during the centers annual Thanksgiving dinner last month. The people at Sawyer were overwhelm- ingly grateful for the $10,000. I was impressed of the need of the overflow- ing crowd at the facility, stated Bishop James Garland, bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Marquette, who presented the check to the center. SFCC received the donation after being named a finalist in the Catholic Extension Societys Lumen Christi award. The award has been given since 1978 to honor indi- viduals and groups who share the light of Christ with their diocese and community around the country. It is presented to an individual or group of people who have demonstrated how the power of faith can transform lives and society. Being a finalist for the Lumen Christi award is a great recognition of the fruit- ful ministry taking place in the Sawyer community. This outreach of St. Antho- ny Parish and the Mission of St. Joseph Northland has been growing at the St. Francis Connection Center, stated Father Allen Mott, pastor of St. Anthony Parish and St. Joseph Mission. SFCC serves the K.I. Sawyer area, distributing food to needy families and helps spread the Catholic faith through religious education, prayer and commu- nity gatherings. The center plans to use the award money to help extend the hours of availability, support and cultivate new volunteers. In addition, it will be used to hire a much needed part-time staff to help facilitate the center and its minis- tries. The cash award will help us expand and sustain the growth. This is truly a freat honor and recognition of the many volunteers that do the work of Jesus Christ called for by Pope Francis and sup- ported by Bishop John Doerfler. Thank You to all the volunteers that served the 120 meals at the center on Thanksgiving Day, added Father Mott. For more information about SFCC, call (906) 346-2386. JOHN FEE THE U.P.
