Words and music extolling our Saviors birth move our hearts to give thanks and praise to God. Of the many beautiful Christmas hymns, O Come All Ye Faithful is probably my favorite. Do you have any favorite Christmas hymns? Have you ever wondered what the very first Christmas hymn is? The first was sung by the angels of heaven when they conveyed the news of our Saviors birth to the shepherds: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. (Luke 2:14) In fact, we make these words our own when we sing the Gloria at Mass, and so we might even say that we have just a bit of Christmas throughout the year. Let us reflect a moment on these words of the angels: on earth peace to people of good will. How many people lack interior peace? These words of the angels also give us a recipe for peace. The angels say, Peace to people of good will. This verse highlights how we achieve peace. People of good will are people who are in a right relationship with God. In other words, if you want interior peace, a personal relationship with Jesus is the answer. In this light, I wish to suggest five steps to begin and develop a personal relationship with Jesus. First, everyday pray a simple prayer inviting Jesus into your life, such as, Jesus come into my life, into my heart. I put my faith in you and give my life to you. Second, spend at least fifteen minutes in prayer every day. I recommend praying with the Bible. Each day read a short passage from Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John, and talk to Jesus in your own words about the passage and what it means for your life. Third, participate in Mass every weekend. Fourth, go to confession at least twice a year and preferably more often. Fifth, do your best to live according to the two great commandments: love the Lord your God with your whole heart, mind, soul and strength and your neighbor as yourself. This Christmas, let us thank God for the gift of Jesus and the way to interior peace. Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will. Sincerely in Christ, +John F.
