Pope Francis says:
Let each of us say: in my life, what are the signs the Lord has accomplished? What are the hints of his presence... To show that he loves us? Let us think about that dicult moment in which God allowed me to experience his love.... What are the discrete and loving signs through which he has allowed me to feel his tenderness? Quotes from Pope Francis' Sunday Angelus address on Jan. 16, 2022.
I
n a previous message I reflected on the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, which is the summit and source of our life. The Eucharist deepens our friend- ship with Jesus when we receive him wor- thily. In this message I would like to reflect on the worthy reception of Holy Commu- nion. Before we receive Holy Communion at Mass, we say: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. Here we echo the words of the centurion in Matthew 8:8 when he asked the Lord to heal his servant. None of us is worthy to have the Lord come and dwell within us when we receive Holy Communion. Our sins have sullied our heart, and only the Lord can heal us and cleanse us of our sins. For this reason, St. Paul urges us to examine our conscience before we ap- proach the Lord in Holy Communion. Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of pro- faning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. (1 Corinthians 11:27-29) Therefore, anyone who is conscious of committing a mortal sin must receive the Sacrament of Penance before receiving Holy Communion. If, however, there is a grave reason and there is no opportunity to confess, a person may make a perfect act of contrition with the resolution of confessing as soon as possible. This requirement is based on the above words of St. Paul. Three conditions are necessary for a sin to be mortal: a grave matter, full knowledge and deliberate consent. If any of these ele- ments is missing, it is not a mortal sin, but a venial sin. Some examples of actions that are a grave matter are: abandoning our faith, becom- ing involved in the New Age or the occult, blasphemy, serious lies such as false wit- ness, perjury and calumny, fraud, stealing a large amount, murder, abortion, physician assisted suicide, euthanasia, causing serious bodily injury, deliberate drunkenness, drug abuse such as recreational marijuana, ter- rorism, rape, adultery, fornication, divorce and remarriage without a declaration of nul- lity, marriage outside the Church without a dispensation, masturbation, contraception, pornography, same-sex acts, prostitution, human trafficking and deliberately missing Mass on Sunday. In addition to confessing serious sins, we should fast for one hour before receiving Communion from any food or drink (except water and medicine) to help us focus on the great gift we receive. We also make a bow before receiving our Lord to show him due honor and respect. What a joy and privilege it is to receive our Lord!
