Behind the scenes
P
rior to my becoming editor of The U.P. Catholic and my wife and I moving to the U.P., I rarely supported our dioce- san annual appeal. There was always a great video that played in church about the appeal. We had a lot of respect for our bishop and subscribed to the diocesan newspaper. Then, maybe wed put a twenty in an appeal envelope. More likely we would pass. Thats not to say we didnt support the Church. Wed con- tribute to the parishs weekly collection. Wed support the col- lections for retired priests and religious. We had a connection to those. My atti- tude toward the diocese was more, Let them take care of their own finances. Now that I work for the diocese and have a vested interest in the appeal, it would be more than a little ironic if I didnt support it, which my wife and I do. Like a few people who have come to work, or fulfill some role at the diocese have said, before I got here, I didnt know they did so much. Here are a few examples. We have beautiful liturgies, including music, across this diocese. Ive been blessed to visit many of our churches and am often moved by the reverence of the priests and the talent of musicians in our parishes. Before working in diocese, I would not have known of the depth of knowledgeintheicesofDivineWor- ship and Sacred Music thats available to enhance our liturgies. Although they have part-time positions, Deacon Tom Foye and Samuel Holmberg are answer- ing questions day and night and working to provide resources that help elevate our celebration of the liturgy. Our Catholic schools have an out- standing liberal arts curriculum thats gaining national recognition. Its devel- oping our students not just academical- ly, but to grow in critical thinking skills, wisdom and most importantly, spiritu- ally. This didnt happen by accident, but by having a visionary superintendent of schools in Mark Salisbury. Denise Foye is a name that will ring a bell for a lot of people. Shes the animat- ed director of Catechesis and Adult Faith Formation who is working with parishes organizing the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, religion bees, vetting materials used to help us grow in our faith and a myriad of other duties. In my previous life I would not have known her and just took so many aspects of church life that seem routine for granted. Fortunately, and youll see why I say that in a minute, there are two people who are generally way back behind the scenes: Father Dan Moll and Sheila Wickenheiser. Their work in the Mar- riage Tribunal on declarations of nullity (annulments) are an important ministry bringing much-needed healing to people and families who have experienced divorce. These are just a couple examples. I could mention the important work of Safe Environment keeping our children and vulnerable adults safe from sexual abuse; Finance and Administration working not only with diocesan finances, but supporting our parishes and schools with hands on work as well as advice; Stewardship and Development helping us to grow in generosity while providing fundingfornotjustdiocesanicesbut parishes, schools and other ministries; theBishop'sicedoingsomany, well, bishopy things; and Id better not to forget to mention my own department, Communications working in many aspects of print and electronic media to provide information and catechesis. Thats the tip of the iceberg. Thank you for your generous support - financial and prayerful - of the work of the Dio- cese of Marquette.
