Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
J
esus Christ is risen from the dead! Alleluia! Because we believe in one God in three persons, the death and resurrection of Jesus is an action of all three persons of the Blessed Trinity. Let us take a moment to reflect on this mystery and draw some implications for our participation in Holy Mass. These reflections are based in part on the book "Awesome Glory" by Abbot Jeremy Driscoll. We can speak about the Trinity in terms of a community of love because God is love. A relationship of love requires that there be one who loves, one who is loved, and the love returned. The Father is the one who loves. He surrenders himself, gives himself over in love to the Son. The Son is the one who is loved and returns the love to the Father. The Son receives the Father's love and surrenders himself, gives himself over in love to the Father. The loving exchange between the Father and the Son is the Holy Spirit. Just as the Father surrenders himself in love to the Son, he so loved us that he gives over his Son to us, he surrenders his Son to death for our sakes. Just as the Son gives himself in love to the Father in the life of the Trinity, so he gives over the Spirit to the Father out of his love for us in his death on the cross. The Father sends his Spirit to the Son which raises him from the dead. As God breathed life into Adam at the creation of the human race, so he breathes his Holy Spirit to give life to the dead body of the Son. The act of the Father sending the Spirit to raise Jesus from the dead is inseparable from the sending of the Spirit upon those who are united to Jesus in faith. As the Father breathes his Holy Spirit to give life to the dead body of the Son, so the risen Son breathes the Holy Spirit on the apostles when he appears to them. In heaven, the wounds of the Son are always before the Father's eyes, beckoning the Father to send forth the Holy Spirit upon us to raise us from the dead. Just as he trans- formed the wounds of his Son to be glorious, so the Spirit transforms all the wounds due to sin in our life and makes them glorious manifestations of the love of God. When we participate in Mass, we are participating in the death and resurrection of Je- sus. When we participate in Mass, we offer ourselves to the Father along with the Son in his perfect sacrifice. As the Son commends his Spirit into the Father's hands, so we place our lives in the Father's hands. We offer the wounds due to sin in our lives to be redeemed by the wounds of the Son. Like his wounds from the cross, our wounds from sin are made glorious as they manifest the loving mercy of the Father. May you and your loved ones have a most blessed Easter, and may you enter more deep- ly into the death and resurrection of Christ when you participate in Mass each Sunday. Sincerely in Christ, +John F. Doerfler Bishop of Marquette
